Cron seemingly stopped

Quick background:

• Use server based trigger for cron
• The server was updated a few days ago (ie replaced) - xenforo code was not updated
• There are now 44523 rows in xf_job (and increasing)
• site is otherwise fine - for now.
• All cron jobs are showing next run date 2-3 days in the past.
• running php cmd.php xf:run-jobs takes a little while, but returns "All outstanding jobs have run."
• on the advice of AI I have just run "

DELETE FROM xf_job WHERE unique_key = 'cron'...
